Why a Tire Pressure Gauge Still Matters

A tire-pressure monitoring system is useful, but a handheld gauge still gives you a direct measurement when you are adjusting pressure, checking a slow leak, or comparing tires. It is also useful on bicycles, trailers, spare tires, and older vehicles that may not provide individual pressure readings.

The important number is the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold tire pressure, normally listed on the door-jamb placard, rather than the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.

The number on a refrigerator's control is a setting, not a measurement of the actual air temperature around your food. A simple appliance thermometer tells you whether the refrigerator is really staying at 40°F or below, which is the temperature FDA recommends for refrigerated food safety.

It is especially useful in older refrigerators, crowded refrigerators, garage units, and after a power interruption. For very little cost, it answers a question the appliance's dial often cannot.

Garden-hose quick-connect fittings replace repeated threading and unthreading with a push-and-release connection. They are useful when the same hose regularly moves between a spray nozzle, watering wand, sprinkler, pressure washer, or other accessory.

The convenience is only worthwhile if the fittings seal reliably. Matching pieces from one system, keeping the sealing washers or O-rings in good condition, and avoiding unnecessary side load on the connection usually matter more than elaborate features.

A salad spinner removes surface water much faster than letting washed greens sit in a colander. Drier leaves hold dressing better because the dressing is not immediately diluted by rinse water, and removing excess moisture also makes washed greens easier to store.

It is useful beyond lettuce, too. Herbs, leafy vegetables, and other delicate produce that trap water between leaves can all benefit from the same centrifugal drying.
