Kitchen
A fine-mesh strainer does jobs that a colander cannot. The tighter mesh catches seeds, pulp, tea leaves, small grains, and bits of cooked food while still letting liquid pass through quickly. It is also useful for rinsing small amounts of rice or dusting powdered sugar without owning a separate sifter.
If you cook regularly, one medium-size strainer with a sturdy rim and handle tends to be more useful than a whole nesting set.
Tools
Diagonal cutters concentrate force at short hardened jaws designed to shear wire. Scissors use longer blades intended for thin sheet-like materials.
Garden
Morning watering gives plants access to moisture before the hottest part of the day while allowing wet foliage and soil surfaces time to dry.
Automotive
Open-circuit voltage indicates state of charge better than it indicates how much current a battery can deliver under load. Internal degradation may only become obvious when the starter demands high current.
