What a Soil Moisture Meter Can and Cannot Tell You
A simple soil moisture meter can help show whether soil is relatively wet or dry below the surface, which is useful when the top inch looks dry but the root zone may still contain plenty of moisture. It can be particularly helpful while learning how quickly different pots or garden areas dry out.
Treat the reading as a clue rather than an absolute measurement. Soil composition, salts, probe contact, and placement can influence inexpensive meters, so repeated readings and direct observation still matter.
