What a Non-Contact Voltage Tester Can Tell You
A non-contact voltage tester can quickly indicate that alternating-current voltage may be present near a wire, cord, outlet, or fixture without exposing a conductor. That makes it useful for preliminary checks and for locating an energized cable among several similar ones.
It should not be treated as proof that a circuit is safe to touch. These testers can respond to nearby energized conductors and can also miss voltage under some conditions. Proper electrical work still requires an appropriate meter and safe verification procedure.
