A thicker extension cord has lower electrical resistance, which matters more as the cord gets longer or the load gets heavier. The gauge number works backward: 12 AWG is heavier than 14 AWG, and 14 AWG is heavier than 16 AWG.
For lamps and small loads, a light cord may be perfectly adequate. For heaters, large tools, or long runs, heavier cable reduces voltage drop and unnecessary heating.
Automotive
A battery maintainer is most useful for a vehicle that spends long periods parked. It monitors the battery and supplies charging as needed rather than treating every connection like a deeply discharged battery.
That makes one sensible for seasonal cars, motorcycles, lawn equipment, and other batteries that may sit for weeks at a time. It will not rescue a failed battery, but it can help a healthy one remain ready for use.
Travel
Packing cubes do not create more luggage space by magic. Their real advantage is organization: clothing stays grouped, compressed enough to remain tidy, and easier to move in and out of a suitcase without disturbing everything else.
They are most useful when you unpack repeatedly during a trip or share a suitcase. If you already pack lightly and stay in one place, they may solve a problem you do not have.
Kitchen
An instant-read thermometer removes a surprising amount of guesswork from cooking. Instead of cutting into meat or judging doneness by color, you can check the actual internal temperature in a few seconds.
It is equally useful for bread, reheated leftovers, frying oil, and other jobs where temperature matters more than appearance. It is a small tool that replaces a lot of intuition with a number.
